Nicola Guastamacchia is an Italian artist based in London. Questioning ideas of property, membership and belonging within and outside art institutions, his work develops between documentary and fiction. Public interventions, photos, posters and text-based installations are strategies to problematise, and represent, fragments of the cultural and political conditions surrounding contemporary artistic production. Temporary and collaborative projects, both research and practice-based, constitute a core element of his practice. Believing that art needs not to be an individual activity, Nicola is member of two art collectives, +0 and Sandwich.

Over the course of the residency Nicola engaged with the wall drawings present in the house. In the room where Mel Bochner painted six yellow squares back in 1971, a short inscription dedicates the work to Michelangelo who “it is said, sought refuge from the pope in this house”. This story, is the pretext to appropriate and contaminate the mathematical precision of Bochner’s conceptual aesthetic with ideas of time, narration and textuality.
